What are Cataracts?
You’ve probably heard about cataracts, but you may not know what they are exactly. Cataracts are actually a growth that occurs on the surface of the eye. They appear on the eye as cloudy areas or patches. These patches tend to grow larger over time and eventually negatively impact the ability to see. For this reason, cataracts are associated with blindness.
Who Can Get Cataracts?
Most people think that cataracts only happen to the elderly. However, childhood cataracts are actually quite common in certain areas of the world where health care is not always available to those who need it. The majority of cataracts do occur as a result of the aging process, though. At the same time it’s important to note that not everyone develops cataracts just because they are older.
What Causes Cataracts?
Cataracts are caused by a protein buildup that occurs in the eye. This protein buildup makes the lens of the eye cloudy, which prevents the patient from being able to see clearly.
What are the Symptoms of Cataracts?
The primary symptom of cataracts is an inability to see the way you used to. You can actually visually see cataracts on the eye without the use of a microscope. When cataracts first begin to develop, the patient may have small patches of blurry vision. But as the cataracts get larger the patches may entirely obscure the vision of the patient.
Do Cataracts Always Need to be Removed?
If you have been told that you have cataracts, you will need to have surgery to have the cataracts removed. Cataracts never go away on their own; they only get larger. Even if you decide to put off cataract surgery, eventually your vision will deteriorate to the point where you will need to have cataract surgery in order to see properly.
